MY STORY

Growing up on a farm near a small town of 800 people, I always felt isolated.

I never had many friends, and I hated talking to people.

Throughout my childhood, I avoided interacting with others as much as humanly possible.

(My escape was always climbing trees. They were silent and didn't expect me to talk.)


Fortunately, I had an older sister who would often speak for the both of us.

Whenever I was asked a question, my sister would jump in and answer for me before I had a chance to open my mouth.

I secretly enjoyed this. It meant I could avoid talking and hide behind her.

Unfortunately, this constant avoidance ended up being a major disadvantage for my future interactions with other people.

I became so comfortable with not talking that when I did have to speak, the discomfort felt unbearable . This continued into my teenage years and young adult life.

I was fine speaking with certain family members and a few close friends, But I became extremely nervous and self-conscious when I needed to talk to anyone else.

The mere thought of interacting with another person made me sick to my stomach. I thought I was hopeless.

HOW DID I CHANGE?

When I entered the professional world, I realized I had no choice but to do something.

Now that I had a real "adult job," I had to interact with people constantly .

It took a LOT to force this smirk.) I had to engage with clients, communicate with co-workers and bosses, speak in meetings, and deliver presentations. It was my worst nightmare made reality.

I lived in a perpetual state of anxiety, and every day was a struggle. After many sleepless nights, I realized I couldn’t continue this way if I wanted to succeed in life. I would have to learn how to deal with people to have any kind of success. (Or, at the very least, get to the point where I don’t hate my life so much.)

Since then, I've spent many years and thousands of hours researching, reading, practicing, and experimenting to figure out everything there is to know about dealing with people.
